ANDREW GARBETT MADRIGAL WRITTEN IN WINTER (2002/rev.2008) for alto solo and ensemble This is a setting of the poem of the same name by Pablo Neruda, and comes from the anthology of poems “Residence on Earth”. I have used the English translation by Donald D Walsh. Scored for solo alto, flute, clarinet, harp and strings it is an unashamedly romantic setting, full of lyrical vocal and instrumental writing, and using a fairly simple, direct, completely tonal musical language. It lasts approximately 9 minutes. Text: “Madrigal Written in Winter” by Pablo Neruda, Translated by Donald D. Walsh from RESIDENCE ON EARTH © 1973 Pablo Neruda and Donald D Walsh.
