TURNING AWAY (2009)

for horn and piano

‘Turning Away’ is a single movement piece lasting around 6 Minutes.  There are three main sections.   The piece begins with a single piano line (played by the right hand) which, although rhythmically constant, is harmonically ambiguous.   When the horn enters, it appears strangely removed from the piano line as both appear to be searching for a way forward.   The second section begins fairly abruptly and both players seem to have a new-found confidence, as the music becomes bolder with a strong rhythmic force and very positive sounding harmony.  The last section is slower, lyrical and more reflective, as if remembering a past time, and ends with a feeling of resignation, if not contentment.
